Matt Vaughan: Die-Hard Sports Fanatic

Because he loves to talk on the phone, write and interact with people (we’ve watched him do all three at once), Matt Vaughan figured a career in PR was right up his alley. As an account executive at MMI Associates, Matt is literally in “talking-writing-interacting” heaven. Although sometimes he’ll tell you it can feel like that other place.

But like all PR pros, Matt knows how to stay cool on the hot seat. When a PR crisis occurs, trust us — you want somebody like Matt on your side. He has worked both sides of the media “fence” of PR and journalism, so he knows how both sides view a situation.

Before coming to MMI, Matt was a correspondent for the Wilmington Star News, staff reporter for the Camp Lejeune Globe and sports editor at Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald. He enjoys column style writing, and his favorite authors are Bill Simmons, David Halberstam and Gary Smith.

While he was sports editor at the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald, Matt helped improve the image of the sports section in the community by focusing on local events along with creating opportunities for readers to voice their ideas and opinions. Matt co-ran the most successful Daily Herald Holiday Classic — a charity basketball tournament benefiting local area high schools — in its 15-year history.

A native of Cary/Apex, NC, Matt earned a B.A. in Communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He has been a Boston Red Sox fan since his boyhood days in Concord, Mass., and comes from a family that has season tickets to Virginia Tech football. He still heads off to Blacksburg a few times a year.

Did we mention Matt is a die-hard sports fanatic?

Public Relations for the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) U.S. 1/64

MMI Associates was contracted to handle media relations and to organize various efforts to open the communication lines between the construction entities on the project and motorists. The firm developed a strategic public relations campaign to ensure that local motorists and those passing through would be aware of the most up-to-date traffic patterns.
