4/21/06 Today With Patty ...

Last night, John and I attended our first Sons of Italy dinner at our local Shriners. Provided by a restaurant, the lasagna, bread and cannolis were delicious, but the eggplant dish was suspect in my book. Normally the food is home-cooked and provided by a member, or more accurately, by the member’s wife.

John stood up and talked about his Italian heritage, and I thoroughly enjoyed being at a function that had nothing to do with me or business. Generally I’m not a gambler, but the event turned into a hoot when we began playing a dice game where everyone stands in a circle and you take turns rolling three unusual-looking dice. Everyone starts out with three dollars, and depending on what you roll, you hand money to the person next to you, take money or do nothing. It was a game of elimination.

I almost won—I was one of the last three people left in the circle. But someone else ended up taking home the pot. If I had won, I would have donated the money to the Sons of Italy scholarship fund. Coincidently this morning I found out that Kipp, who is Italian, was a beneficiary of this scholarship when he was in college.

After we left the dinner, I asked John whether he wanted to join the organization and he said, “I don’t know. Sounds like we would have to do stuff.”

Do stuff? Of course! I was already planning an Italian dinner for thirty-five people and thinking about what I would cook …
