4/25/06 Today Without Patty ...

Patty called us from Chicago, where she and Kate are attending the Women Presidents’ Organization conference. Their flight was uneventful, except for when Patty tried to lift her briefcase into the overhead bin and re-injured her shoulder.

Now Patty’s shoulder hurts again. But she is suffering in silence as usual.

Kate doesn’t like to fly, so Patty thoughtfully began to point out all the dangers that they were successfully avoiding. Sometime during the flight, after Patty asked for the third time, “Did you hear that noise? That thumping sound? What was that?” Kate gave Patty the evil eye, and Patty decided she’d better clam up.

They arrived at their hotel and spent twenty minutes in an absolutely inane conversation with the front desk people about the lack of an iron in their room to press their clothes. Later, back in their room, Patty fought with her laptop, cables and modern technology to gain Internet access so she could read her e-mail.

The last we heard, Patty and Kate were relaxing at a pub called O’Neals. They have a meeting to attend tonight, where Kate has to give a presentation. Patty is making Kate practice on her. The patrons of the pub are looking askance and moving off to more distant seats whenever possible—but we heard that Kate’s delivery improved considerably after she downed her first beer and forgot all about being nervous.

After the WPO meeting, Patty and Kate plan to put on their walking shoes and see downtown Chicago at night. Watch out, Chicago! However, the weather is COLD compared to Raleigh, and Patty says she’s freezing her arse off, so it will be a short trek.
