4/3/06 Today With Patty ...

Saturday night I attended the University of North Carolina’s Blank Canvas Dance Show, where MMI former employee Allison Davis performed in a series of dance numbers, some she even choreographed herself. I am totally not prejudiced, but I have to say that Allison was hands down the best dancer AND choreographer of the evening! Some of the other dance numbers actually looked more appropriate for a stripper pole. I think I am getting old and intolerant.

I enjoyed a Girls’ Night Out this weekend with Sepi, Erika and Suzanne. It was really fun and good to be out with the girls, although we talked about business, as usual. We should challenge ourselves just once to talk about shoes and fashion, like normal girls.

To give y’all an update on the saga of my convertible research: I drove around with the top down this weekend and I’m pleased to say that I did get honked at. It may have something to do with the fact that I accidentally cut the driver off, though. He waved at me, too … with one finger. Must have been a Yankee.

I am happy to report that I have a full staff back at the office and there has been no hurling and no sickness today. Mary is back from the Bahamas, looking so tanned, rested and relaxed that I’m jealous. Kate is back, too, although she’s still a little swollen from her wisdom-teeth surgery. We have nicknamed her “Alvin.” Apparently, Kate’s mom took really good care of her this weekend, so thanks, Mom!

In spite of sickness, pestilence and plague, MMI staff were able to rally and attend Toast to the Triangle, an evening full of gourmet food and drink and one-of-a-kind fundraising event to benefit the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities. It’s amazing how free food and liquor motivates my staff. I bought a chair at the auction, bidding against my neighbor. I got the chair, but then my husband John complained that we have no place to put it. John just doesn’t get it—that chair was totally a good deal!

Don’t tell John this, but I also bid on a couch. The only reason I didn’t get it was because Darlene Johns bid against me and she has more money than God. We were bidding back and forth, and we had gone up to $500, when Darlene turns to me and asks, “What do you think this is worth?” I told her, “$1200.” Then what does she do? She promptly writes down $1200 and buys the couch. I hate to lose. Do you think Darlene will surprise me and give me the couch? She really is one of the most generous and quietly philanthropic people I know. I admire her greatly. She is an amazing woman—who has my couch!
