5/1/06 Today With Patty ...

The Women Presidents’ Organization conference is over with, thank the Lord! Chicago was beautiful and absolutely clean, like New York with manners, and all these gorgeous tulips were in bloom. I could blog about everything that happened at the conference for pages and pages, but this is only a blog, after all.

The conference was a lot of work, but we received excellent coverage in the media. We set up a number of interviews with the Wall Street Journal and I’m excited to see how they turn out.

I met this very tall, friendly guy in an elevator and had no clue he was the NBA basketball star Shaquille O’Neal until somebody told me later, after I had already chatted with him and asked him how tall he was (over 7 feet) and asked if he can see the tops of people’s refrigerators (he can).

Kate was complaining about how exhausted she was and I told her to “buck up” because I am twice her age and I was hanging in there, so she should be able to do the same. She had brought nothing but heels in her luggage, and we were doing a lot of walking, so Kate excused herself for a quick trip to go buy some flats. She comes back about an hour later with two new pairs of heels. “Those aren’t flats,” I said, and Kate said, “But aren’t they cute?” Her next stop was Walgreen’s for some bandaids for her feet.

I caught an earlier flight home on Saturday, arrived in Raleigh at 8:30 pm and went to bed early. Kate stayed to see a friend in Chicago and didn’t get home until 2 am this morning. She’s still tired today, and wonders why I have no sympathy for her.

When I drove my convertible to work this morning, I noticed that my brakes were not behaving as they should, so I called John and asked him to bring me his car and take mine home until we can arrange to get the brakes serviced. Instead John brings me the Jeep. He is so persnickety about his car, a station wagon no less! He never lets me drive it. He says he “knows” what I do to cars.

Today is Kipp’s birthday and in celebration, all the women in the office dressed as men and we held a “You Da’ Man!” party. The mustache I painted on my upper lip with eyebrow pencil is freaking people out—especially John, when I asked for a goodbye kiss. For a whole year and a half, Kipp has been the only man in our office, but now we have Ryal, too. Maybe Ryal thinks we’re all strange. And maybe we are.

There’s Nothing About Mari … Mari sent me an email that said: “In today’s blog I think you should really focus on your college days and how you’d breeze into my domicile to change clothes and then enjoy a sumptuous meal so you’d be fortified for your evening classes and how I was always prepared to joyfully acommodate your needs, forsaking my own personal and /or family needs.”

Mari, this blog is already too long, so you will have to wait until tomorrow. Get over it, Mari. It’s all about me—me, me, me!
