5/5/06 Today With Patty ...

by Patty

Today is Cinco de Mayo, and here at MMI, we have had a long, stressful week. Therefore (and because I am the best boss ever), I am sending everyone home early at 4 pm to celebrate while I, on the other hand, catch up with a mountain of paperwork. I am buried with work and have not checked my email in two days. However, I feel like talking about something besides work, so let’s talk about Mari.

There’s Something About Mari’s Kids … Mari has three children: Amy, Adam and DJ, who we affectionately called Rosemary, Damien and Cujo when they were growing up. In the early days of my friendship with Mari, I would babysit these three, but Mari would never provide me with the gun and whip I needed to keep the little monsters in line.

One day I was babysitting Mari’s kids and turned my back on them for five minutes, leaving them out in the yard while I went into the house. When I came back outside, Damien and Cujo had pulled all the bricks out of the walkway and were throwing mud at the side of the house.

I hosed them off, took them inside and told them that they had to behave. But as soon as I turned my back, the kids snuck into the living room—which is a no-no in Mari’s house—where they had popped the glass top out of the coffee table and were playing “submarine” with the table shell.

I went and got myself a glass of wine. Babysitting the fruit of Mari’s womb was what made John and I decide never to have children.
