7/17/06 Today Without Patty ...

by Gloria

I just got off the phone with Patty, who asked me to blog about her day in Wilmington. Here’s the account of her day so far:

“Bright and early this morning, Michelle and I left for Wilmington. The sad thing is that Michelle was in Wilmington yesterday and she had to drive all the way back to Raleigh just so she could turn around and go back to Wilmington again today.

“Michelle’s deep-seated fear of dying has kicked in, and like the rest of my staff, she does not like the way I drive. Not that I blame her. I talk on my cell phone, reach back behind the seat to grab my purse, eat bagels and drink coffee—all at the same time. I do everything but steer with my toes. It can be a bit disconcerting to someone who isn’t used to driving with me.

“I drove John’s sacred station wagon today, because he did not get around to renting me a car. My convertible, which had a heart attack recently, is still in the shop. I am happy to report that I only hit one curb. However, we were passing a double-wide that was fishtailing all over the highway, when all of a sudden rubber and insulation were flying through the air. Something hit the side of the sacred station wagon and made a dent. John will blame me.

“We had lunch at Nofo in Wilmington, where I had a really good shrimp BLT. But that was a long time ago, and now we are ready for ice cream.”

This is all Patty had a chance to say, because suddenly she let out a little shriek and said, “We just found a Dairy Queen! Bye!”

And that was the end of the phone conversation.
