For those of you who don’t know me at all, I am a big sports fan. I love anything to do with athletics whether it involves playing a sport or watching one. My sports addiction has been fed quite a bit lately though. First I went to the Carolina basketball game vs. Virginia last week. My dad called me at about 4 pm asking if I wanted tickets to that night’s game. I didn’t know who I could find with such short notice but Allison was happy to tag along being an alum. We had a great time, the game was close and we even snuck down to some great seats. I had plenty of opportunity to yell. The most entertaining part though was the end of the game. Carolina won and I was pulling on my jacket and wrapping my scarf around my neck getting ready to go home. Allison turned to me and said, “You know you have to sing, right?” I said, “Sing?” Please remember, I attended Elon where athletics are clearly not on the same level. The band started playing and everyone around me launched into the fight song. Allison guided me through all the motions and said I gave it a good effort.
This week, I had the opportunity to meet Carolina Hurricanes head coach, Peter Laviolette. He spoke at the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Breakfast Club of the Triangle ‘s event this morning. Wednesday, WRAL had to interview him regarding this morning’s event. I arrived at the rink as practice ended and met up with WRAL’s Jeff Gravely in the media room they have set up at the rink. I had a good time waiting, watching all my favorite players pass by on their way out. When it came time to meet Coach Laviolette he stuck out his hand and said, “Hey, I’m Pete nice to meet ya.” As he spoke I quickly realized he must be from Massachusetts just like I am! He still sounds like it though whereas the southern drawl has caused the sound of the letter “R” to appear in my speech. Coach was nice and his speech this morning was very entertaining. He talked about why they won the Stanley Cup, a story for another blog, and showed a funny video created internally for the team.
Finally, MY TEAM, the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS are advancing closer and closer to the SUPER BOWL! I must admit, I am a die-hard fan and don’t ever think they will lose but the Chargers had me nervous. However, after the ugliest football game I have ever watched and a lot of yelling at the TV, we came out victorious! Now we just have to squash Payton Manning and the Colts and we’ll be back at the Super Bowl! GO PATS!
So that has been my sports update, have a great weekend!
