A weekend in the mountains...

by Kate Catlin

Last weekend I went to Boone, NC to visit my sister who just transferred to Appalachian State University after two years at East Carolina University. I had not been to Boone before so I was excited. It was their homecoming and they were playing Elon University – for those of you who don’t know I graduated from Elon. I was expecting chilly weather and was not let down when I arrived on Friday night. Evidently they are all used to it but I was freezing. Saturday and Sunday were GORGEOUS though. Both days were sunny and mild. Being from the north, I like the crisp fall weather that Boone has. It was a good thing it was beautiful weather because the football game was awful. App beat Elon 45-21. It was not very fun to watch so we ended up leaving early. Sunday we went out to breakfast at Sunrise Grill. It was so good – my sister ordered Crunchy French Toast. It was French toast coated in corn flakes and deep-fried. It was amazing. I had a huge pancake and we both had cheese eggs. We did not finish it all but we made quite an effort. After all that food we went and walked around downtown. My dad’s birthday was Tuesday the 3rd so we bought him gifts. We also went to the Mast General Store and stocked up on some good old-fashioned penny candy. We had a great weekend. My sister and I are super close so it is tough to be far apart. I definitely see more trips to Boone in the future.
