At least there were fireworks.

I LOVE my country and I’m a BIG fan of Independence Day). I grew up spending my July 4th evenings on a blanket on the beach with my family and a radio. The fireworks would start in Kill Devil Hills just after Kitty Hawk, with Nags Head and Manteo following the festivities. In one good spot you can see the sky lit up for miles. That’s my kind of celebration.

With all of the options for fireworks in the Triangle, I decided that it may not be so bad to spend my day off around here. I joined some friends at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park to watch Team USA stomp Japan 7-2. I had been looking forward to the fireworks all day, and when the game ended we were more than ready to see the show. When the fireworks didn’t happen for a good 30 minutes because of a presentation, some of the crowd grew impatient. Because everyone and their mama was there, we parked on the very top of the parking deck, so we decided to get ahead of the traffic and watch the show from the hood of the car. I love DBAP, and I love fireworks. I do not love fireworks at DBAP. Maybe I’m spoiled, but the show didn’t come close to the quality I was looking for and we STILL got stuck in traffic.

It did at least beat last year’s strike of bad luck. It was a beautiful day. It was my last week of vacation before giving up on freedom and re-joining the workforce. I invited a friend from Raleigh to join my family for the holiday and we spent the entire day on the boat. It was perfect…until he decided to give wakeboarding a try. We missed the fireworks that night and spent the next 3 days in the Outer Banks Hospital. With my dad driving the boat, he managed to twist his femur into three pieces – they had known each other for two days. Did I mention Johnny Davis is also a butcher? I’m doomed.
