Fresh off the Patriots 21-12 victory over the Chargers last Sunday and the Giants improbable 23-20 overtime win over the Packers, ESPN had a new so-called “breaking story”. It wasn’t about Eli Manning or a Patriots/Giants rematch. It wasn’t even about Super Bowl XLI. With two weeks to go until the game of the year all anyone was talking about was – Tom Brady’s ankle?
Newsworthy
I understand that not only is Brady a great player – he has sex appeal too (calm down ladies). This makes sense. What I refuse to understand is how Brady walking around in a boot (under his jeans mind you) in New York City is breaking news on CNN, CNBC, FOX News, ESPN, USA Today and E!
Even if you delve further into the story, there is no substance to it. Brady isn’t hurt. He wore the boot during the day – for one day – then took it off and went to the club with his girlfriend Gisele Budchen.
Patriots PR Bus
When I really thought about this though – it’s genius. Now the media isn’t talking about the undefeated season (the Pats have a chance to go 19-0 with a win next Sunday) or Brady’s terrible performance against the Chargers. Everyone is talking about the boot. The rest of the team can relax and prepare for the most hyped game in the world without the typical media frenzy. The Patriots are garnering more national attention than ever and not receiving any scrutiny over their play or off field situations (i.e. Randy Moss’s possible battery charge).
Like always, Brady is leading his team. Now he’s just doing it off the field.
Simply Brilliant.
