Can TiVo beat Apple in the Portable TV Market?

by Kipp

TiVo announced yesterday that its new TiVoToGo to go will support Sony’s PSP and Apple’s new video ipod. How will this effect Apple’s recent entrance to the portable video market?  Currently Apple is charging $1.99 for someone to purchase an episode of a television show or for a music video.  With the TiVo service users would pay their regular TiVo fee and be able to put all of the TV they want to on their ipod or portable video player.  This could be a huge marketing win for TiVo.  The key word is COULD.  What do they need to do? Copy what Apple did.  With the ipod and itunes Apple did what no one else had done make digital music easy for the non computer savvy public.  If TiVo can do the same and make it cheaper than Apple’s offering, TiVo will see a major increase in sales as the portable video market grows.  That being said, TiVo has to now deliver, it needs to deliver easy to use software, reasonable file transfer times, and make all of it easily understandable to the general public. What do you think?
