Cheers to Matt

by Meredith

This week I wanted to use my blog as a forum to congratulate my brother, Matt Morgan. My youngest brother Matt is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina and a HUGE Tarheel fan. Myself being a North Carolina State University graduate and HUGE Wolfpack fan, you can only imagine the spirited banter on football, basketball and the ethics of our alma mater’s athletes that have dominated the conversation during family get-togethers. Despite my brother being a member of the dark side, he and I our a lot alike when it comes to the passion we have for our careers.

I started interning in Public Relations and advertising for local sports teams my sophomore year in college. Those internships turned into a career and I spent my most of my ‘adult life,’ up until taking this AMAZING position with Coldwell Banker Howard Perry & Walston, working in sports for teams such as the Carolina Mudcats baseball team and Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes. Once my brother entered his sophomore year of college, I saw him begin to take the same journey I had, working tirelessly, for little financial compensation, to achieve his goals. As a junior, Matt began writing articles on UNC basketball recruiting for The Tarheel Monthly. He has spent several years there and has continued to add new newspapers to his resume such as The Chapel Hill News and The Cary News. I have taken such pride in him over the years as he is grown and matured as a writer. When Matt graduated from college, he got a great job working for the University of North Carolina, but he wasn’t writing, and that is his passion. He continued to write for TTM and local newspapers to continue to refine and hone his craft, but I know he longed for a career in sports journalism.

Well, his dream is finally taking shape. Matt Morgan has officially been introduced as the new Sports Writer for the Wake Weekly, a weekly newspaper covering the happenings of Wake County. I can’t tell you enough how proud I am of him. He has worked so hard to achieve a goal and it is coming to life before his eyes. He is one of my best friends and I think we do a pretty good job of supporting each other through tough times. So, raise your glass and toast my little brother, the Sports Writer! Check out his articles in The Wake Weekly and The Tarheel Monthly.
