I know, this is supposed to be Candy’s blog, but I have been too busy. I asked an intern (Chelsea) to write a blog about her work experience. Read below – we think she is a terrific writer. We love Chelsea so much we have invited her to come to work for us during the school year. Hooray! Candy
Chelsea’s Blog:
I have to admit that I didn’t think I would be able to find any place that would hire me this summer, as I was only able to work for three weeks because of our Foreign Language trips at school that overlapped into our summer and my yearly venture down to Florida to visit my mother. Luckily, I was wrong, and working at MMI has been a great experience.
When I first started looking for a summer job, I was a little sad at the thought of giving up my lazy summer afternoons spent lying around with my friends at the pool and complaining about the heat. But that was solved when I was able to choose my hours. I begin work at nine in the morning, which is still later than school, but early enough for me to be finished by one so I get to gain the experience without losing any playtime.
Being the first high-school student to receive an internship here makes me the youngest person in the building, which was a little weird and intimidating at first, but I’m over it now. The bigger problem was that, being so young, I’d never actually been old enough to have a summer job until now (except for last year, but I think even if people will hire fifteen-year-olds they’re still more reluctant to… or maybe I’m just making that up as an excuse for the fact that I didn’t really try to find a job last year). That meant that my work experience was entirely limited to babysitting children in my neighborhood and helping my mother make necklaces to sell in her art gallery. This made me pretty nervous the first week, but everything was fine once I got into the swing of things.
Every morning, the first thing I do is send out whatever is in the pile of things to be faxed. Sometimes they are press releases; sometimes they are news articles; and sometimes both. I had actually expected all of my work to be jobs like the faxing and that one time when I rearranged the tabs on the folders (which was actually kind of fun for me; I don’t organize much, but when I do organize things I like to really organize them, which is why I also alphabetized the fax cover sheets better during the faxing even though I wasn’t actually told to), so I was pleasantly surprised when I got to do some real writing too. There were press releases, sure, but I also got to write some real articles, which was exciting. I have also spent a lot of time researching things that seem to be pretty random sometimes: like the ten best places to live for lake sailing or the ten most famous trees in America.
I think that MMI was definitely the best place I could have worked this summer (and I’m not just saying that because I know who’s going to be reading this). Everyone is very friendly, which makes for a nice and casual working environment, and I have really enjoyed myself working here. This is my last week here, but I hope I am able to return during the school year.

MMI Associates was contracted to handle media relations and to organize various efforts to open the communication lines between the construction entities on the project and motorists. The firm developed a strategic public relations campaign to ensure that local motorists and those passing through would be aware of the most up-to-date traffic patterns.
