If you are a metal band baby of the 80’s, you are familiar with three things: acid washed jeans, teased hair and Guns N’ Roses, whose long awaited-album Chinese Democracy has been in production for more than a decade. The creative minds behind Dr. Pepper refuse to wait another year for this metal rock masterpiece and have launched a campaign promising every American one can of soda if the legendary band releases their album sometime this year.
Supported by front man Axl Rose himself, the campaign has focused on social media to reach Dr. Pepper’s core demographic – males aged 18 to 34. A blog has been launched dedicated to the evolution of the band’s new album, including updates on both the band and the campaign. The most ingenious part of this social media approach is that the blog appears user-generated in attempts to break down the wall between consumers and corporate America. There isn’t a single link to Dr. Pepper on the blog.
By connecting such a popular brand with such a legendary band, Dr. Pepper has created what could prove to be an extremely successful social media campaign. So put on your leg warmers, grab your copy of Appetite for Destruction and crack open an ice cold Dr. Pepper – Chinese Democracy is coming.
