What WAS Duke thinking? Obviously the Duke Lacrosse debacle and subsequent smeared reputation were not enough to straighten up Duke’s act. Sunday, while everyone else was enjoying Tom Petty’s PG Super Bowl half-time show, Duke University was hosting a Sex Workers Art Show, a visual and performance art show designed to offer a wide array of perspectives on the sex industry, spanning from a celebration of prostitutes’ rights to the darker sides of the industry. To add insult to injury, the show was University-sponsored, with groups such as the Women’s Center, Sexual Assault Support Services and the Women Studies Department all backing this provocative event.
After the extreme mismanagement of the Duke Lacrosse scandal, Duke must either be out of their minds or truly committed to maintaining their questionable reputation to host such an outwardly promiscuous event. Someone needs to step in and remind Duke to stop “Bringing Sexy Back” and lay low for a while, so that everyone can begin to forget about the scandal that wrecked havoc on the University’s good name. Duke is a well-esteemed, prestigious university which should be weary of the image they project. Hosting a Sex Worker’s Art Show this close to the aftermath of the Lacrosse incident was not exactly the best way to boost their fragile reputation. Will they ever learn?!
Click here to check out the Sex Workers’ Art Show in more detail and tell me, what do you think about Duke’s support of this event in wake of their tumultuous past?
