Exploris Hosts September 11th Fifth Anniversary Commemoration

by MMI

RALEIGH, N.C. – Bonnie Hancock, Exploris president, has announced that the museum will host a September 11th Fifth Anniversary Commemoration to memorialize the events of 9/11 and honor the spirit of service with which America responded. The event will be held from 7:45 – 10 a.m. on Monday, September 11, in the IMAX Theatre at Exploris and will be free to the public. The morning will include a moment of silence, firefighter remarks, and the unveiling of a fire hook given by the New York Fire Department to the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation to express gratitude for their assistance after the attacks.

The commemoration will be held in conjunction with the museum’s featured exhibit, The Enemy Within: Terror in America, 1776 to Today, which opened at Exploris on August 26 and will run through November 26. This exhibit, which provides a historical perspective on contemporary issues of homeland security and civil liberties, was created by the International Spy Museum in Washington D.C., opened in May 2004, and began its tour around the United States in February 2006 in Oklahoma City. It focuses on nine major events in history when Americans felt threatened by enemies within its borders and includes a timeline that leads up to the September 11th attacks.

“As we remember the shock and despair we endured five years ago, it is important that we honor the American spirit of compassion and unity,” said Hancock. “Our goal is to provide a place for the community to come together to pay tribute to those who were directly affected by these events and to commemorate the resilience our country displayed in the face of such challenges.”
