I am amazed at some of the replies for MMI’s current job opening. I received an e-mail box full of applicants. Here is my advice for any future applicants (whether to a job here or somewhere else).
1.Follow the directions. If the posting says, send an e-mail, then by all means send an e-mail – do NOT phone.
2.Follow the directions. If the posting says, paste your resume into the body of the e-mail – then paste the resume into the body – do NOT send an attachment and DO proofread the resume for typos.
3.Follow the directions. If the posting asks for available start date and salary requirements, at least respond. I know, the salary question can be a tough one. I might not want to give a specific number either, but at least acknowledge that you saw that part of the posting and are negotiable. Or if you are NOT negotiable, then go for it, but remember, MMI’s current job opening is for a Junior PR Account Coordinator. Let me repeat in capitals – JUNIOR and COORDINATOR (not account executive, but coordinator).
4.Follow the directions. If the posting says e-mail to a specific person – then e-mail to that person – no other person – and certainly do NOT post it as a comment to our blog (you know who you are!).
5.Proofread, proofread, proofread.
Your resume is the first impression we will receive of you. Make it good. Many candidates are making the first cut quite easy for me. I purposely put some specific directions in there. I figure if you cannot follow basic directions, you would have a hard time being disciplined in any job. Next step, picking the top 10 and doing a phone interview. Got to get back to work – what did you write in your letter than makes you be one of the top 10?
Oh, and by the way, did I get my message across – follow the directions.

MMI Associates was contracted to handle media relations and to organize various efforts to open the communication lines between the construction entities on the project and motorists. The firm developed a strategic public relations campaign to ensure that local motorists and those passing through would be aware of the most up-to-date traffic patterns.
