Though her husband may be low in the polls, first lady Laura Bush is up in the Neilsen Ratings. On Tuesday morning, Bush was the first first lady to ever guest host on NBC’s The TODAY Show, co-hosting an entire hour of the hit morning program. But this appearance wasn’t just for show – co-anchor Ann Curry and company put Bush to work, allowing her to handle multiple interviews during her stay.
Bush first conducted interviews with daughters, Jenna and Barbara, and author R.L. Stine (Goosebumps , anyone?) before jumping on the green bandwagon. She spoke with eco-friendly lifestyle expert Robin Wilson and gave Curry a tour of the Bush family ranch in Texas (appropriately called “The Western White House”), displaying many ways the family is attempting to be environmentally friendly.
Bush, most importantly, used this platform to promote the presidential family as normal and relatable, perhaps in an attempt to gain back some of the support her husband has lost. She said that her IPod has Motown and oldies on it and laughed at a clip of her husband dancing at a New Orleans event.
Her appearance certainly went over well with viewers, showing a personable side of the first lady that viewers may not have seen before. Many have to wonder, though, if it’s too little too late for a president who, according to last week’s Gallup Poll, is the most unpopular president in United States history.
