Holi-daze

by Heather

I am trying really hard to get into the Christmas spirit. For some reason I’m rather Grinchy this year. Maybe because my kids are getting older and there is not quite so much wonder and amazement? Maybe because it’s 75 degrees? Maybe because I have no clue what to buy anyone this year?! Thank you, Ken Bunn, for spear heading the majority of the shopping this year! On Friday evening I finally threw myself into Southpointe mall during the most maddening shopping hour and attempted to fill myself with some holly jolly. I saw Santa and gave him a wave. I purchased a festive red, leather belt to match my notorious Ruby Slippers, helped a friend pick out a holiday party outfit for his wife, and made a nice little dent in the gift list. Hurray! I came home more merry and bright – the family was relieved, for sure! My Grinch heart grew 2 sizes larger Saturday night as I sat in the middle of piles of wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, gift tags, Scotch tape and boxes and spent 4 hours wrapping Christmas gifts, sipping red wine and watching Battlestar Galactica and Talladega Nights. I love wrapping gifts! This mindless, precise, mundane, glittery task signifies that Christmas is really coming and that I am somewhat prepared! Now there are presents under my tree. Just a few more left on my list, and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here.
