About the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle:
The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a nationally recognized non-profit organization serving seven counties in North Carolina. Since its inception in 1989, the food rescue outfit has grown from a small grassroots movement operating out of the back of a station wagon to a nationally renowned authority in the area of perishable food recovery and hunger relief. The organization now has a fleet of 10 trucks, a staff of 11 and more than 750 volunteers. Recognizing the need to help people become self-sufficient, the Food Shuttle started the Culinary Job Training Program in 1998, providing culinary job training and life-skills for unemployed and underemployed men and women. The Food Shuttle has been nationally recognized, featured in publications as diverse as Southern Living, Franklin Covey’s Priorities Magazine, and Prentice Halls’ 9th grade 2001 civics textbook. The Food Shuttle has won the Excellence in Food Rescue Award three times and is a member of the President’s Circle of America’s Second Harvest. More important than any recognition, the Food Shuttle enjoys broad community support with volunteers donating over 45,000 hours each year and over 210 food donors contributing over 5 million pounds of nutritious food annually.
