RALEIGH, N.C. – The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle begins its Summer Food Service program on June 14 with multiple distribution venues, in Raleigh and Durham counties, including the Garner Road YMCA, Mt. Zion Christian Church and the St. Paul Youth Development Center. The program distributes nutritionally rich breakfasts, lunches and wholesome snacks to low income children during the summer months and is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“We are pleased to again offer the Summer Food Service program,” said Jill Staton Bullard, executive director of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. “For 17 years, the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle has been delivering nutritious meals that benefit local children all throughout the Triangle.”
About the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle:
The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a nationally recognized non-profit organization serving seven counties in North Carolina. Since its inception in 1989, the food rescue outfit has grown from a small grassroots movement operating out of the back of a station wagon to a nationally renowned authority in the area of perishable food recovery and hunger relief. The organization now has a fleet of 10 trucks, a staff of 16 and more than 750 volunteers. Recognizing the need to help people become self-sufficient in order to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, the Food Shuttle added the Fisherman’s Project in 1998, providing culinary job training and life-skills for unemployed and underemployed men and women. The Food Shuttle has been nationally recognized, featured in publications as diverse as Southern Living, Franklin Covey’s Priorities Magazine, and Prentice Halls’ 9th grade 2001 civics textbook. The Food Shuttle has won the National Excellence in Food Rescue Award three times and is a member of the President’s Circle of America’s Second Harvest. More important than any recognition, the Food Shuttle enjoys broad community support with volunteers donating over 45,000 hours each year and over 300 food donors contributing over 5 million pounds of food annually.
