Kickball Rocks!!!!!!!!!

by Elizabeth

Last night, Team Call My Mom faced our biggest challenge yet at Laurel Hills Park. As many of you know, we have been dominating teams we have played in the past, but it was a close game last night. I wish I knew the name of our opponent, but all I can tell you is that they were blue and orange. I joined this league to have fun and play kickball like we did years ago. Apparently, our ref did not get that memo. The general rules for the league is that there must be 4 girls and 4 guys to play a game, and there has to be an equal number of each if you go above 4. One of our team members had to relieve her bladder before the game started, and the ref would not let her play because she was not there for “roll call” at the start of the game. We told him she was in the bathroom, and he must have thought we were trying to pull a fast one because he quickly commented “Come on guys, that doesn’t work.” I must say all of us were staring in disbelief. Since she could not play, we had to take a guy off the roster for the night. The ref then made notes of what numbers could not play in the game – what a hardcore sport!

Of course, we did not care what he said, and there were many frenzied moments of shirt changing during our turn to kick. At one point, the ref asked “How many shirts do you wear?” Think you can get us? Haha. Think again.

Anyway, on to the action. I did pretty well, considering I had to play third base and my catching skills are non-existent – I could not catch a cold if I tried! Luckily, I had someone there to help me out when there was a pop fly. I got on base every time, and the other team even backed up when I came to the plate. I used to play soccer, so I have no problem kicking the stuffing out of that ball. Even though I never scored a run, I kicked some in.

The other team was super serious, to say the least. They had a coach, not a player, but an older woman who was their coach. She stood right outside the dugout with her clipboard taking notes, no doubt stealing some of our good moves. They even had their own lingo and strategy, and there is no doubt they practice. We just show up, kick the ball and win – that’s it. It was a tight game, and we emerged victorious once again, this time 5-4. I cannot wait to play again, even though every muscle in my body is sore today. We may be in the Christmas Parade after all!
