Krispy Kreme vs. Dunkin Doughnuts

by Kate Catlin

I spent some time in Massachusetts the weekend before last and came across an interesting development. We were waiting to be seated at Legal Seafood in the Prudential so we decided to walk around to kill time. While breezing past the food court, I remembered that someone had told me there was a Krispy Kreme there. I stopped and checked it out but was confused when there was not a doughnut in sight. I asked my cousin Kylie about it. Her response shocked me, “Oh yeh, they got rid of it. No one liked them.” Now I was born and raised in New England so I grew up loving Dunkin Doughnuts, but to think that NO ONE wanted the Krispy Kreme in the Pru? I must admit I was shocked. As a resident of North Carolina, I could not believe that this had happened. People go crazy over the “Hot Now” doughnuts. So I asked her, “Oh, was it just a stand, it didn’t have the “Hot Now” option offering fresh doughnuts did it?” Another shock. “Nope, it had all these conveyor belts and everything. It was like a little factory. No one really liked it though.”

Surprised as I was, I didn’t think much of it until I got home and did some research. Turns out Krispy Kreme claims that they were doing just fine but wanted to lease a smaller space, the Pru could not accommodate that so they parted ways. I also found this article about another location. Interesting. There are only a handful of Krispy Kremes in all of New England as opposed to about a million Dunkin Doughnuts. I personally like Dunkin better but I have no problem inhaling a Krispy Kreme either. What about you?
