Looking forward with Exploris

by Allison

Today, as American hearts and minds shifted back to September 11, 2001, that life-altering day was remembered in a number of ways. Here in Raleigh this morning, I had the privledge of taking part in the 9/11 Fifth Anniversary Commemoration at Exploris. After a weekend of community events, during which Exploris honored everyday local heroes and facilitated a discussion of NC homeland security, the typically light-hearted children’s museum filled the IMAX Theatre with community leaders, community members and students – all of whom took the time to honor the many lives that were touched by terror five years ago.

This morning’s speakers included William Johnson, President & COO at Progress Energy ; Tony Gurley, Chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners ; Reggie Holly, Deputy State Director with the Office of Senator Elizabeth Dole ; Congressman David Price ; Congressman Bob Etheridge ; Congressman Brad Miller ; Dr. William Atkinson, President and CEO at WakeMed ; and Captain Andy Woodall from the City of Raleigh Fire Department.

The ceremony was both moving and inspirational as each of the speakers demonstrated the hope and unity with which our country responded to attacks on our nation. Exploris will be the temporary home of the fire hook used at Ground Zero, donated this morning from the New York City Fire Department to the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation in gratitude for their support five years ago.
