I remember last August when I joined MMI as a part-time writer. I came to work at 9:00 a.m. and left at 1:00 p.m. Oh, the life of a part-time employee. Early on, I found the MMI team to be so much fun, the work to be right up my alley, and Patty to be a challenging and exciting person to work with. So, I became full-time and the last couple weeks have been overwhelming – both in hours and in fun.
The challenging part. MMI is growing by leaps and bounds and one of my responsibilities is to do the initial screening for potential employees. When I did this before, I wrote a blog about following directions – many applicants have not learned. How hard is this? When I say to include your resume in the body of an e-mail – and point blank say I do NOT open attachments, that should be easy. Oh, well, I’ll keep looking.
Now the fun part. Last weekend, I joined Claire, Kipp, Michelle, Nicole, Ryal and others in Roanoke Rapids at Carolina Crossroads for their first major event – an outdoor concert with Big & Rich. We handled the corporate sponsor tent and media relations – what a blast. I’ve been doing this for years and still enjoy the adrenalin rush from events and especially enjoyed our younger staff as they took on the challenges that big events bring.
Although I’m not much on blogging, I just want to give you a hint about the good times.
-Standing in the pouring rain at a pig pickin’. There were two tents – a huge tent with food and people and a really small tent with beer. Guess where we were?
-Driving across a dirt field in my baby pickup with Nicole squished in between Ryal and me. Bouncing around on what Ryal told us was a shortcut. I swear I never saw a road there.
-Shopping in the local Wal-Mart for snacks for the media. We filled an entire shopping cart with junk food. You would think it would be easy to do, but each of us had specific demands when it came to junk food.
-I’m not a starry-eyed kind of a girl. So meeting Randy Parton or Big & Rich or any of the other ‘famous’ people, didn’t impress me as much as seeing a really hard-working media team help make the event a huge success.
Patty and I are heading to Carolina Crossroads next week to see if there are more events for us in the future. I hope so.

MMI Associates was contracted to handle media relations and to organize various efforts to open the communication lines between the construction entities on the project and motorists. The firm developed a strategic public relations campaign to ensure that local motorists and those passing through would be aware of the most up-to-date traffic patterns.
