RALEIGH—The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced that it will temporarily reduce a half-mile section of northbound U.S. 1/64 to one lane at the Tryon Road overpass, beginning Friday, April 28, at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Monday, May 1.
The Department will use Friday, May 5, beginning at 9 p.m., through Monday, May 8, at 6 a.m. as the weather make-up dates for this closure.
The lane closure will allow for additional paving of the northbound lanes. Motorists should expect delays and are advised to take an alternate route.
The U.S. 1/64 widening project is a $58 million project to improve U.S. 1/64 from south of the I-40 interchange to the U.S. 64/Tryon Road interchange in Cary. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2006, weather permitting.
The NCDOT reminds motorists to stay alert, obey the posted speed limit of 55 mph, be aware of construction workers and watch signs for construction information. The fine for speeding in the work zone is $250 and violators may receive three driver license points.
Motorists can visit the project Web site www.us1wake.com for news and updates regarding the project. Web site users also can register to receive e-mail updates about the U.S. 1/64 improvement project.

MMI Associates was contracted to handle media relations and to organize various efforts to open the communication lines between the construction entities on the project and motorists. The firm developed a strategic public relations campaign to ensure that local motorists and those passing through would be aware of the most up-to-date traffic patterns.
