New Video Available From Stanly County's 3-31 Political Protest

by Patty

More than 200 North Carolina citizens, business leaders, officials and other supporters of Stanly County showed up to help North Carolina recapture its water from a private multinational corporation on Monday. Neither the rain nor looming Alcoa lobbyists could prevent a successful demonstration. From 11:30 until 1:30 p.m., supporters fought to preserve the right to prevent private interests being granted unfair use of North Carolina public resources. The demonstration was held in downtown Raleigh at the Bicentennial Mall near the intersection of Salisbury and Edenton streets. Protest signs were sported, speakers said their piece and media interviews were conducted by News 14 and WRAL. Fox News in Raleigh ran pre-protest announcements and several media outlets across the region have contacted our firm for follow up interviews with Stanly County Commissioners. The ball is officially rolling.

As mentioned in previous blog posts, the current license Alcoa holds expires on April 30, and this multinational corporation now wants to receive a new 50-year license so that it can continue to generate power to sell at market prices for profit. The company already receives $40 million in gross annual revenues now from the Yadkin River hydroproject, and even with new enhancements under the relicensing, the annual costs will be nowhere the gross revenue amounts. On the other hand, the people of North Carolina would receive absolutely nothing in return if Alcoa is relicensed, except for maybe more responsibilities that would cost us in terms of time and money.

We still have a long way to go to win this thing. But yesterday was a huge step forward. We have received a permit to protest again on May 14.

For your viewing pleasure, new video from yesterday’s event is copied below. Say it with us now, “We Won’t Wait for 2058!”
