Not A Moviegoer

by Jill

I’m not much of a moviegoer. Every so often there will be something that I HAVE to see immediately when it comes out in the theater, but I haven’t had that happen in a while. In fact, the last movie I saw in an actual movie theater was when I saw Marie Antoinette last July.

I don’t rent many movies anymore either. I used to have a Netflix account, but that got old real quick once I went through everything on my list that I wanted to see and there were no new release that sparked my interest.

However, a couple of weekends ago I had a huge urge to rent some movies. Blockbuster was just calling my name! After picking out a couple, I got to the register and realized I had no clue where my Blockbuster card was. I hadn’t used it in over a year and a half, after all. I wasn’t even in their system anymore! After emptying my entire purse and wallet, I gave into signing up for another card. Luckily I had the nicest Blockbuster employee working with me, who just happened to be a fellow ECU Pirate.

I quickly filled out my application and was anxiously on my way home to watch the movies I, so desperately, wanted to see. Of course, in true Jill fashion, the DVDs sat on my coffee table for 5 days (and one or two phone calls from Blockbuster reminding me that my DVDs were 2 Day Rentals).

When I did finally watch my DVDs, I was pleased with The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. Even though the plot was completely far-fetched — all I could think was that this would never, ever in a million years happen in real life — it was a cute story and the end was surprisingly uplifting. I won’t lie, though — I did shed a tear or two.

I also watched Bobby, which I wasn’t that impressed with. I remember watching Emilio Estevez on Oprah right before the movie came out in the theaters, and he was so passionate about Bobby Kennedy and the movie. Oprah even interviewed a man and woman who got married on the day Bobby Kennedy was assassinated, who were portrayed by Lindsay Lohan and Elijah Wood. But overall, the movie wasn’t as factual as I expected it to be as far as the characters were concerned. For me, Rolling Stone summed it up best in their movie review of Bobby, referring to the movie as a “real tragedy attached to trite fiction.”
