Oh Mebane...

by Kate Catlin

So yesterday I went with Michelle to Mebane to help with an Open House at Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston’s Mebane office. Everyone in the office had been kidding me about going because for those of you who don’t know I am from Mebane – not born and raised but my parents moved us there right before I started eighth grade. I have lived there long enough to be wise to Mebane’s small town ways. As we got off the interstate and started driving through town, I turned to Michelle and said, “It is so WEIRD to be in Mebane with YOU.” It was as though my work world and my past life were combined. We parked at the office and had to walk around the building to go in the front door. I was carrying the giant scissors that can be viewed on Michelle’s previous post when Michelle said, “Kate, what if one of your friends sees you carrying these huge scissors?” That was when I knew that Michelle understood Mebane. Mebane is such a small town, I did end up seeing numerous people I know in that hour we were there. I walked in and saw one of my mother’s good friends. She was a little surprised to see me but put it all together when I said I was Jean’s daughter. A few minutes later another HPW agent looked at my nametag and said, “You’re Tom’s daughter aren’t you?” I affirmed his suspicions and he went on to tell me he knew he remembered me from when I was a lifeguard at the pool – yes, there is only one pool in Mebane. The best part of my trip though is when my parents arrived to attend HPW’s open house at my request. They got to meet Michelle and see a little bit of what I do when I tell them I have an event. It was comforting to see all those familiar faces but made me proud to know that I made it out.
