As Public Relations firms scramble to keep up with new online social media applications such as blogs, vlogs, podcasts and social media news releases (just to name a few), many will do so without taking the time to effectively translate the definition and PR Strategy of these items to their client.
In my opinion, this is the single-largest slip for many PR firms currently adding new media items to their set of provided PR services. What good is a podcast if the client doesn’t understand a. what a podcast is or b. how it will help their business? Many clients have no answers for a or b and it is our [the PR professional] responsibility to help narrow this gap.
Understanding Your Audience
Also worth a quick rant: I think is equally important for PR firms to understand their audience when using these social media applications – what they like, what they don’t and how these applications are evolving. With that said, I give you Jennifer Woodard Maderazo, associate editor of PBS MediaShit and author of the blog “6 Reasons I’m Not Hooked on Podcasts.” This piece, and thousands just like it, represents valuable content for PR firms that use new media applications, or more importantly, attempt at using new media applications effectively. PR professionals will without a doubt make countless mistakes in moving forward. But the smart professionals will acknowledge these mistakes and the mistakes of others, and adapt as necessary.
There’s my two cents for the day. I would love to hear your thoughts. Do you see PR value in social media applications? Does your company podcast and/or blog? If so, what role did your PR firm have in helping you through this process?
