Pseudo Sex and the City: Date 1

by MMI

This Wednesday at Michael Dean’s, my first blind date was an overall success. Here is what went down. I walked through the doors at 7:00 pm sharp. It was freezing outside, but I felt confident in my outfit and I was ready to dive back into the dating world. Tall heels, good jeans, plunging neckline and a jacket, I was feeling pretty good. Luckily I was not the first one to arrive. I’m not going to lie, explaining to the hostess what was going on was a little embarrassing; a character strengthening experience if you will. The hostess led me to the bar for the awkward introduction to my date, “Bill.” “Bill” had blond hair and piercing blue eyes, average height and average personality. He was 29 and in pharmaceutical sales. It took him a little while to open up, but it wasn’t anything a bottle of red wine couldn’t fix. So we split a bottle of the Rodney Strong and split a Greek pizza and the conversation flowed pretty smoothly from there. I found out that he was from Florida, went to school in Colorado, and has lived everywhere in between; even Wilmington, a tiny little beach town that will forever be close to my heart.  He is also world-traveled, a definite plus in my book. He is going to Honduras for New Year’s, and I was hoping by the end of the bottle I would be getting an invite, needless to say, I did not. We talked about work, sports and Wilmington. He is a big time surfer and he loves to sail and scuba dive, pretty interesting fella. He told me about his other dates, I was his eighth. How many times can a guy say that and it be O.K.? Apparently his past dates were not all that successful and he said that I was definitely the most interesting. Interesting? Really knows how to compliment a lady. I must have done something right, because we are having dinner on Monday at a little Italian joint. You still got it, Kate! Awkward moment number two was when the check came. “It’s Just Lunch,” says that the appropriate thing to do is to go Dutch, which we did. Was that a hint that I should bring cash on Monday? The final uncomfortable moment was our departure. Like a gentleman, he walked me to my car, and then we busted out the good old- fashioned handshake.  He got my number and we parted ways. Over all about a 6 ½. My next date is Thursday at a swanky downtown bar and restaurant with “Dan.” Wish me luck and I will let you know how it goes!
