The PR Writer – 10/04/06
I love reading the publishing industry blogs written by editors, agents and authors. They are wacky and wonderful. Two of my favorites are:
1. Miss Snark, The Literary Agent, in which “Miss Snark vents her wrath on the hapless world of writers and crushes them to sand beneath her T.Rexual heels of stiletto snark.”
2. Evil Editor, in which Evil Editor critiques query letters written by authors who are desperately trying to sell their books. Evil Editor prints the letter exactly as it came to him, adding his own comments in a different color.
Most of the slavish readers of these two blogs are writers. We’re a masochistic lot, you know. Writers collect rejection slips the way other people collect sports memorabilia. We show off our stacks of rejections to our writer friends and even wallpaper our walls with the darn things. Besides that, we chase after editors and agents the way teen fans run after their favorite musicians.
A writer is truly a pitiful creature … until he or she becomes famous. Then at last a writer attains dignity. But I want you to know that writers’ tender souls are scarred for life long before they reach this pinnacle.
Sometimes I wonder how we writers have survived the explosion of the Web and the Blogosphere. Talk about competition! Now everybody’s a “published writer.” Mark Twain and Hemingway and Chekhov are probably turning over in their graves.
