Remember 9th grade?

by Allison

Take it back with me for a minute. (Way back for some of you, maybe not so far for others.) Either way, remember your first day of ninth grade? Remember the feeling of excitement, dread, anticipation and confusion? How about the rest of high school? I don’t know about you, but for those of us who grew up in TheMiddleOfNowhere, North Carolina, high school was often more of a social space than a place to learn. And after graduation, what did we remember? Not much. I only knew that there had to be something bigger and better out there than what I was leaving behind. Lucky for 97 Wake County high school students however, bigger and better is here already.

Today, I had the pleasure of witnessing the first group of Wake County freshmen walk into high school AND college at the same time. It’s called the Wake Early College of Health and Sciences and if you ask me, it’s the best idea for a solid and exceptional education I’ve ever heard. These students will have the opportunity to earn free college credit from Wake Technical Community College and internship experience at WakeMed while earning their high school diplomas. The school is open to all Wake County rising ninth graders who must apply to attend. Where were you, Wake Early College, when I was in high school?!
