Save The Environment…And Win Some Cash

by Michelle

College students all over the country celebrated Valentine’s Day with a heart. This time, it wasn’t made of candy.

An article in Environmental & Climate News titled “College Students Take Issue With Bottled Water” explains that many college campuses kicked off the “I Heart Tap Water” contest on Feb. 14, sponsored by Food and Water Watch. This video contest asks students to create and submit short films encouraging others to drink tap water instead of bottled water in response to the idea that bottled water is not as environmental safe as consumers are being led to believe.

Many environmentalists believe that bottled water is of no better quality than tap water and is a waste of billions of consumer dollars each year. The shipment of water requires the consumption of oil – an estimated 1.1 million barrels each year – and the release of over one billion pounds of carbon dioxide into the air. Municipal water is often the source of the bottled water bought by consumers – at extreme markups.

The winners will be determined by celebrity judges, such as Alec Baldwin and will receive cash prizes up to $1,500. The contest ends on April 14. So, if you’re a college student, grab a camera and some tap water – saving the environment has never been so lucrative.
