The need for a college football playoff system

by Kipp

Last night Rutgers victory over Louisville was a victory for people like me, who believe that their needs to be a playoff system in college football. Right now we have the BCS system which is essentially a two-team playoff system, but that is just not good enough.

We need a 4, 8 or 16-team playoff system, why don’t we have one? Well that is a great question, you would think the answer to that would be money, but that can’t be the case. The TV and ticket revenue generated by a multi-team playoff would be huge, easily surpassing the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Well the next accuse for not having a playoff system is that the season is already too long, ok I agree. If that is the case then cut the conference championship games don’t give team 3-4 weeks off before the bowl games start. A playoff system would allow you to have games on all different days of the week, the marketing potential would be huge.

Next accuse, it would diminish the importance of the small bowls. How would it, they are already insignificant what is important about two 6-5 team playing in a game no one has heard of. College basketball has the NIT tournament and we never hear about the NCAA tournament hurting the NIT. If anything a playoff system would allow second tier bowls the opportunity to host meaningful games that could impact the national championship.

My final issue is the most important. The current system that we have is encouraging teams to play easier competition and that is degrading the quality of regular season college football. Think about it, if Texas had played a lower ranked program that they could have beat 55 to 0 the second game of the season, instead of #1 Ohio State they would be in position to play for the national champion ship as one of the few remaining undefeated teams.

Please lets revamp college football and develop a way to crown a true national champion, lets establish a playoff system that will allow for great competition and a clearer national champion.
