Today one of our account executives shared with me how a client had complimented a document I’d written about her. The client said it “brought a tear to her eye as she read it wondering who this person was.” The person was her, of course, and the client had accomplished everything I had written about. I hadn’t made anything up.

Sometimes we don’t know our true worth until we see it on paper. Having words published about us somehow makes our lives seem more real, more purposeful and more touching than before. Everyone’s life tells a story, but some stories are more heroic and moving than others.

The trick with PR is to help people know their story and create an air of mystique around their public persona. The word “persona” comes from Latin and has to do with the mask worn by an actor. When we say public persona, public relations professionals are not speaking about acting fake or pretending to be something you are not. Your public persona is the identity or role you play in your business and social spheres. Crafting that persona so that you have respect from your public, and power and influence over others, is one of the secrets of good PR.
