Do you remember your first bike? I’ll bet you do. Mine was a red Schwinn with a glittery banana seat, pedal brakes, chopper-style handle bars and silver streamers flowing out of the white handle bar grips. Sa-WEET! I covered many miles of sidewalks and paths thru the woods around Clinton, NC on that baby! My best friend, Anne Faircloth had a matching bike and we thought we were just IT! The Schwinn is long gone, but I still love riding a bike. Now mine is a Felt 50 road bike that recently carried me on a 60-mile tour from downtown Raleigh out past Falls Lake and back on the Alliance of AIDS Services• Carolinas AIDS RIDE 2007.
Every kid should have the pleasure of a new bike. Coldwell Banker HPW Builder Services sales associates, Ashley Wilson and Jenn Nowalk think so to and are the co-founders of The Triangle Chapter of The Spokes Group. The Spokes Group, a nonprofit organization that distributes new bicycles and helmets to less fortunate families during the holiday season. They are partnering with The Salvation Army of Wake County to collect donations and distribute the bicycles in time for the holiday season – with the initial goal of donating 200 youth bicycles to area families this year.
The Spokes Group of Charlotte was originally created in 1994 by two businessmen who realized the difference that could be made by raising money to purchase brand new bicycles for children during the holiday season. The first year, 17 bicycles were purchased and a tradition was born. To date, the organization has raised nearly one million dollars, resulting in the donation of 14,176 new bicycles! Gifts of $10, $20, and $70 added up quickly! (Each assembled bike and helmet cost $70).
For decades, the quintessential gift to receive on Christmas morning for children of all ages has been a shiny new bike. The Triangle Spokes Group is excited about the idea of carrying on this tradition in the Triangle and making the holidays brighter for local children.
100 percent of the money donated to the Triangle Spokes Group goes directly towards the purchase of bicycles and helmets.
