Turkey day came and went last week with the usual Thanksgiving holiday festivities. Turkey was cut, stuffing was stuffed, and I was able to spend three quality days with my family in East Lansing, Michigan. What made this year’s Thanksgiving unique was the fact that it was held only hours after an amazing 13 ½ hour drive from Raleigh. Yes, you heard me right. I drove to Michigan, stayed for 3 days and returned to the highway for yet another equally lengthy 13 ½ hour drive home on Sunday. I must admit, I actually enjoyed the drive. There’s nothing like the open road, when accompanied by good music and good company. A co-pilot is key to a lengthy road trip. With this in mind, I somehow convinced a good friend from Raleigh to come with me and meet my great family. Now Christmas is quickly coming around the mountain (no pun intended, however if you haven’t driven through West Virginia…brace yourself! The lanes are narrow and the trucks seem to have a mind of their own at times), and I want you all to know that as great as the recent road trip was, I’ll be flying Northwest come this December. I’ve copied below some items I deem essential to a successful road trip. Feel free to email me your own personal favorites.
Must Have Items For Road Trips:
1.A car with the proven ability to withstand a long car ride.
2.Great Music. Live concerts are highly recommended.
3.A great co-pilot. Preferably one that can stay awake during the difficult a.m. shift.
4.A Cooler. Beware of gas station stops for mindless junk food. However, please note that gas stations have been known to carry a great selection of sunglasses at a very low price.
5. Magazines. Not for the driver! Ask your co-pilot if they get carsickness during car rides from reading on the road before purchasing too many magazines.
6. Comfortable clothes. You’re going to be in the car for a while. I recommend a good pair of Abercrombie & Fitch sweatpants.
7.A Map. Mapquest is a quality way to get from point A to point B.
8.A great final destination. Nothing like seeing family for the first time in a long time.
