To the Heroes Among Us

by Allison

I’m getting excited about spending the weekend with Exploris. If you haven’t heard (you must have been living under a rock), the museum is hosting a full weekend of events to honor 9/11 and the many amazing Americans who work so hard to keep our communities safe everyday. I think it’s about time we all stopped to say “thanks,” and that’s exactly what we can do at Exploris this weekend.

It all begins with a Community Day on Saturday. Exploris is going all out for this one. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. you’ll find all kinds of exciting features at the museum. We’re talking fire trucks, dogs, police officers on horses, local youth performances, hands-on activities, and community group booths galore. You can even donate disaster kit items to the Triangle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

As the proud daughter of a volunteer fireman, I know what it means to have a hero. As a kid, it was Family Night at the Conway Volunteer Fire Department (when the other firemen’s children and I hopped on the back of the fire truck for a night ride around our tiny town) that made-up for the phone calls that took my daddy away in the middle of the night. Today, the satisfaction instead comes from knowing that he and his buddies make a big difference in other people’s lives by doing what they do – a difference that cannot possibly be understood until we need them ourselves.

Join us at Exploris on Saturday to pay tribute to these men and women – these quiet heroes among us – who stand ready and waiting when we need them.

From all of us at MMI, THANK YOU for all that you do.
