Today With Patty – Dec. 11, 2006

A week after the gum graft surgery, my mouth is much better, and I feel like I am starting to be on the mend. However, every time I accidentally hit my jaw, I do see Jesus.

The Speaking of Women’s Health conference on Saturday was wonderful. For a fee of $35, everyone who attended received $135 worth of goodies. There was a $10 card from Wal-Mart, makeup from Maybelline and L’Oreal, a Schick Intuition razor (my favorite), and Garnier hair color and deep conditioner bottles, among other gifts. The conference kicked off with an opening session featuring African dancers and bongo players, and they pulled my friends Erika Mangrum, president of Iatria Day Spa, Angela Baylis, doctor of chiropractic and owner of Iatria Health Center, and Cindy Anderson, managing partner of C.D. Anderson, P.A., from my table to have the ladies dance with them. Thank God I did not get forced into doing that, especially at 9 in the morning. I have no rhythm – I have to watch when people clap so I can follow along.

The activities offered at Speaking of Women’s Health included one breakout session sponsored by Iatria Spa and Health Center, “Foundations for Aging Gracefully,” about non-invasive technology that can rejuvenate the skin. There were also health screenings for measuring bone density and the risk of heart disease, and even a presentation on belly dancing. Again, I was glad I did not have to be forced into doing that. Elizabeth is blogging about the event in more detail along with some photos – check here for more information.

Today I attended the Triangle Community Coalition luncheon discussing public-private partnerships. The forum included Robbie Ferris, president and CEO of Firstfloor Inc. in a panel discussion with Wake County Commissioner Joe Bryan and Mike Burris of the Wake County Public School System examining a new state law allowing a private entity to build a school and lease it back to a school system over a 40-year period. That part of the luncheon went fine, but the food was mysterious. It was definitely not my usual luncheon fare of chicken and something else. It was chili – and not very good chili – with salad and cornbread.
