Today With Patty – March 8, 2007

The fundraiser for Secretary of State Elaine Marshall yesterday went wonderfully. It is always so easy and pleasant to do an event with Sheila Ogle, because she is the “hostess with the mostest.” We had quite the turnout, over 100 people, and my staff turned out in full force to work the event, which allowed me to sit in a rocking chair at Sheila’s front porch along with Sheila and have a glass of wine while the troops did all the cleanup. My staff is amazing, and I am so proud of them, particularly Allison (Davis – who is “old Allison” as opposed to “new Allison”), who planned and executed the entire event.

This morning I rolled out of bed, hacking and coughing, sneezing and sniffling. I am never one to admit that I am sick, and neither is Kipp. Kipp has had a problem with his eye for the last couple of days. He thought it might be pink eye or some fiberglass that got in his eye while changing filters at home. His eye has been all red and swollen, but he insisted that nothing was wrong. So when I came in this morning, I was honking and coughing and insisting that I am not sick. Kipp insisted that I sounded like a musical instrument. Is that any way to talk to your boss?

So I promised him that I would not go out to an event this evening if he would go see the eye doctor. He explained that he did not need to go, until I pointed out that he would look lovely walking down the aisle at his upcoming wedding with an eyepatch. You know, like a pirate wedding – “Ahoy there, matey! Yarrr! Send me your virgins!”

As usual, I digress. He did go to the eye doctor. They removed a foreign chuck of sickness from his eyeball, which by the way was infected (mother knows best). They wanted to have him wear those old man plastic wraparound glasses, but somehow he talked them out of it.

Ryal and I went to Greensboro today. Downtown Greensboro is surprisingly quaint and nice. It was really great, because Ryal drove me, even though I am not really sick, but – I could use a little rest. I think he was secretly relieved, because he thinks that I drive like a maniac. By the way, he drove very sedately. The weather was nice – we could have put the top down. However, I decided that injecting pollen and allergies at 70 miles per hour might not be the best course of action in my weakened state. I do think Ryal has decided that he is in love with my car. I have news for him, because he will be continuing to drive me now whenever we go somewhere. I got so much done!

For me, I am going to try and get as much as I can done today or, in the words of Billy Joel, “making love with my tonic and Nyquil.”
