Yesterday I went to Charlotte to see their transit system. They call it the Charlotte Area Transit System, CATS for short. They are considering doing something similar in Raleigh, but I do not think we can use the same name because the Raleigh Area Transit System would come out to be RATS. There are too many jokes there.
The CATS system is a multi-pronged system with a light rail, rapid transit, buses and street cars. The diversity of the system allows the city to provide the right transportation for the right area. There is so much economic development around all the different transportation stations, it has been a major encouragement to their growth. Raleigh really needs to start incorporating some of these ideas in order to stay viable. Eventually the congestion here is going to kill us.
We went to ride on the LYNX system and they gave us a scratch-off ticket that looks a lot like the kind that you get for the lottery. What you are supposed to do with the ticket is scratch off the year, month and day you are traveling as proof of payment. I did this, but the boys I was traveling with were not as sharp. They were scratching off the numbers 2 and 4 for the date, which was the 24th. Men!
