I haven’t blogged for quite some time now because I have had a house full of people. I love having all this family in to visit, but truth be told, I’m just too old for all of this.
We ran around on Wednesday to show them Raleigh. (Rail-lee as my Australian brother-in-law calls it.) Then Wednesday night I made homemade pizza for everybody and then my sister insisted that she had to have pumpkin pie. It didn’t matter that my cousin was going to bring the dessert for Thanksgiving or that I hate pumpkin pie. We trekked to the store to get the stuff and then my sister proceeds to fall asleep on the couch while I’m making #@%#& pumpkin pies at 11 o’clock at night!
So, I get up at the crack of dawn the next morning to get stuff ready for all my company. Of course I decided to brine my first turkey which was well worth it because it was the best turkey I have ever had. But it was an absolute mess and it took me forever to clean it up and get it ready. Of course I can’t ask John to help because he is not allowed to lift anything because of his back surgery. I’m chopping, dicing, slicing and stuffing. I’m setting the table, cleaning up the mess —- all while everybody is sleeping. So the company arrives, we visit, we eat, we sit outside, we eat some more, we talk about family, we eat more and finally we’re done. When they left, I literally passed out. There was no way I could have done those dishes if my life depended on it. Luckily my husband is able to lift a dish in his weakened condition and he persuaded my sister and brother in law to help.
Touring the Coast
On Saturday morning, I got up again at the crack of dawn so we could leave and visit the East Coast of North Carolina. We visited Little Washington, Bell Haven, Oriental, New Bern, Swansboro, Cedar Island, Beaufort and Wilmington. All in two days and with a four-year-old. The best part of the whole trip was Jacq, my four-year-old niece, going to the beach and picking seashells and telling me it was the most “fun-fun” thing she had done, “ever-ever”. Of course later in the day we found a big jolly man in a red suit that let her sit on his lap and she pronounced that to be very “fun-fun” also.
We arrived back in Cary last night, tired but thoroughly schooled in the small towns of eastern North Carolina. Unfortunately I’ve eaten so much junk food and good thanks cooking since Wednesday I’ve probably have gained ten pounds. More later.
