Last night I went a meeting of N.C. State’s PRSSA Society with Ryal to discuss “The Essentials to Begin a Career in the Public Relations Industry,” and I was so impressed that the room was packed. Truth be told, I was feeling a little bit cocky that so many people had come out to hear us. I was even thinking, “Wow, I must be pretty important!”
Then of course as I am leaving, I get a huge dose of reality. Check out the flyer put up for the event below. There is nothing like free food to bring the college kids out.

Ryal was a big hit. The fact that 95 percent of the room consisted of young women may have had something to do with it. But I was very proud of how well he did. He did not have anything to eat because it was too easy to get the food – it was not “hot” or stolen.
A Sea Lion Gift for Me
Below you will see some thoughts from a good friend of mine, Jeff Snell of Enlign Business Brokers, who happens to be a little bit of a smart arse, but he is the best business broker in town. Knowing about my recent sea lion bite, he wrote me the following:
Last night I told Carrie I was going to send you a stuffed sea lion with a “hope your feeling better” card. I thought I was so witty. Then, this morning I read your birthday blog where you said no one gave you one (I apologize I didn’t know it was your birthday). So, I’m not so witty after all. However, maybe this will redeem my self belief in my own sarcastic creativity:
A sea lion is one of many marine mammals of the family Otariidae. Sea lions are characterized by the presence of external ear pinnae or flaps, long front flippers, and the ability to walk on four flippers on land when attacking tourists. They are generally found in shallow waters of coastal areas of both northern and southern hemispheres, with abundant food sources like PR reps on holiday.
Sea lions of many species have seen a severe and rapid decrease in numbers in recent years. Many factors including over fishing of prey species, shooting by fishermen and pollution have probably contributed to the decline as well as choking on human flesh, which is not a native food source. The population of Steller sea lions in Alaska has declined as much as 80% since the 1970s. In contrast, California sea lions are abundant and the population continues to expand at a rate of approximately 5.0% annually, as it has since the mid-1970s. Sea Lions of the Galapagos Islands have especially thrived with the typical bull sea lion displaying protective motherly behaviors.
Sea lions are often a popular attraction at zoos and aquariums, performing behaviors such as throwing and catching balls on their noses and clapping. PR reps are also a popular attraction with sea lions, providing an opportunity to define their position in the herd while snacking at the same time.
