Today With Patty: Winter Storm What?

by Patty

I grew up in Missouri where I walked to school in ten feet of snow with cardboard wrapped around my feet. I lived almost ten years in Connecticut where we had some mighty fine snowy winters. I have spent a good deal of time in Phoenix where it never snows. It is perplexing to me regarding all the hoopla surrounding snow here in the Triangle. Not just snow but the possibility of snow. Winter storm warning they claim. People go and sell out of all the bread and milk. They cancel classes. When will the madness stop?

I admit I was looking forward to snow this past weekend. I love snow on a Saturday when I do not have to go anywhere and I can sit inside next to the fire with a cup of hot cocoa, watching the world become wintry white. But what occurred Saturday was not snow, it was a light dusting and not worthy of the minute by minute news flashes and hysteria that accompanied it. We really need to get a grip on winter weather around here.

A Friendly Visit

I had a nice surprise on Sunday as some old friends of ours from Connecticut called as they were in town for the game. I finally figured out after much prodding that it was a Duke/Clemson basketball game. You know how I love sports. They flew in Saturday and left on Sunday so they did not think they would find us available, but because of the “horrid” snow storm, we were. Rick and Karen along with Rose and Rick came over for a quick dinner and we had the opportunity to catch up. We have been friends for more than 20 years and I am sorry to say, other than Rick’s hair getting gray, the two of them look exactly the same. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about me. Dang.

Doctors Orders

Rick and I knew each other when I was executive director of the American Cancer Society and he was president of my board of directors. He was the most fun president I ever had and he was also my doctor. However, we had a rule that he could only treat me from the shoulders up and the knees down as anything else would be just too weird. I would go to see his partner for all of the other things. I think the two of us just figured that it would be more comfortable when we were having dinner if he had not performed a breast exam on me earlier in the day.

Patty Is A Fan-i-low

So, I am back in the office today having to endure the comments about the hardship that everyone had to endure while working on this holiday. Too bad it is not a snow day. Hey, speaking of snow, the Barry Manilow concert was cancelled due to the ferocious weather. Give me a break. It was Sunday night! I have to figure out when it is being rescheduled for so I can go.
