Boy, Patty sure picks the right time to get out of town. The office has been abuzz this morning with talk about the chemical fire that started late last night in Apex. The evacuation of the town did not affect any of us directly, since none of us live there, and we work right at the border between Raleigh and Cary. Still, the event was so big that CNN covered it, and we have heard from people outside of America who wondered how we were doing. It seems that a lot of the press coverage has put Apex “near Raleigh,” and with that statement along with announcing that 17,000 people had been evacuated, it’s understandable that people outside our area might think we would be involved. So in case you’re wondering, and for the record, we’re fine, other than the fact that it’s raining a fair amount today, and we appreciate your notes and calls of concern.
Apparently the town of Cary heard a lot of questions about the incident as well. They put out their own press release on the matter, and it included the following statement from Assistant Town Manager Ben Shivar: “As we have since the incident began, Town Staff are monitoring the situation and have plans and resources in place should things change. Although our community is, thankfully, not in any imminent danger, it is a good time to remind all citizens that they always need to have a current 3-day emergency kit on hand as well as a plan to reunite were an emergency to strike while family members are scattered.” The release added that in the unlikely event that a Cary evacuation was necessary, the town would use all means to quickly notify citizens. That’s good news for Ryal here in the office, since he was concerned enough about the situation that he asked a local policeman if we needed to evacuate as well.
As for Patty, she called today from the Turtle Cove Spa in Turtle Cove, Arkansas, where she, her husband John, and Erika and Dave Mangrum of Iatria Spa and Health Center are on vacation. She said she is recovering from horseback riding. She claimed her horse Sandy knew she had not been horseback riding for 20 years and so in response made sure to run her into every tree on the property. Naturally, her hip and knees are sore following the experience.
Patty added that the weather there is gorgeous. She’ll back in the office Monday, as well as back here to tell how the rest of her trip went this weekend. We wish her, John, Erika and Dave (as well as Erika and Dave’s daughter Heather) a safe and swift return.
