Trends and the Trendy

by Heather

I have always prided myself on being rather trendy. I know my compulsion for all things “IN” in entertainment, fashion, music, technology, design etc. comes from my awesome step-mom Donna. Last night I was tuned in to Saturday Night Live”. For those of you who not watched SNL in awhile, it still comes on at 11:30 PM – 1:00 AM every Saturday night on NBC. I have watched SNL since I was in 6th grade–jump in your WayBack Machine and visit 1980! These days, I usually hit the TIVO and enjoy it with the Sunday cup of coffee! You know the set up. There is a cast of regular players and then a guest host and guest band or musician. There I was, perched on the couch, anxiously awaiting the SNL season premiere…the musical guest “The Killers!” Cool! I love them. They’ve got a new release! Then, when they flashed the face of the cutie guest host I drew a blank. Who WAS this guy? Dane Cook? Who the heck is that?! Maybe he’s some reality TV host. I loathe reality television. So I watched and waited for him to come on and do his opening bit. Still…no clue! Okay, this was really ticking me off! How could I not know who this guy was? Me, the trendy one! Me, with the lifetime subscription to Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair! I was ticked! Horrors! Am I suddenly so elderly at 37 that I don’t know who the SNL guest host is?! So I did what any savvy 30-something does…I revved up the Mac and Googled the boy! There he was on IMDB.com (a great entertainment site, BTW)…he’s the guy in that new Jessica Simpson movie “Employee of the Month”!
Still…ouch! Am I losing my trendy edge? Nah, it was late and it’s his first movie!

I did a little real estate trend watching this week at Colvard Farms , a spectacular new home community near Southpointe Mall in Durham with homes from the $800s. We at Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston Builder Services are so excited to partner with this account! Colvard Farms hosted the 2006 Durham, Orange and Chatham County Parade of Homes Kick off Party. Over 500 realtors and builders attended last Wednesday night to get a sneak peek at 11 Parade Homes and some of the most fabulous new home trends in the Triangle. Some of the coolest ideas I saw where great use of out door living spaces, amazing kitchens, enormous theater rooms…..and my favorite….traditional hardwood stair treads with the traditional ivory trim BUT the stair risers were painted an almost Godiva dark chocolate so they don’t show scuff marks! Fabulous for the mother of two scuff marking kids! It’s trendy and functional. Wonder if Dane Cook will paint his stair risers chocolate to prevent scuff marks too?

The Parade of Homes runs October 6-8, 13-15 12:00 – 5:00 pm. Check it out! Coldwell Banker HPW Builder Services is proud to support 68 Parade Homes this year in 52 communities!
