University Day, The Best Holiday Of All

by Tim

Patty can finally rest easy. I’ve finally cracked into the blog here at MMI. So all of our loyal readers can know that all of us here at the office have blog’s up and running. As a University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill student and MMI employee, I have decided that I need to highlight the best holiday on the university’s calendar, University Day. The holiday consists of a two-hour event, from 9:30 a.m. – noon, to celebrate the founding of the university during which all classes are cancelled. Not only is this a great time for the faculty and staff to reflect on the founding of the university at the event, it is also the perfect time for sleepy eyed students to take their annual two-hour commemorative nap.

Being the seasoned super-senior that I am I have been planning for this day since the first day of classes. This was done mainly in the planning of my absence of my 8 a.m. class on this annual holiday. The class, Race and American Politics, creates an active class environment, which in order to work necessitates an attendance policy where students are only allowed to miss two classes all semester. I’ll be honest it has been difficult to adhere to such a strict policy, but I had managed to save my two days with one thing in mind, and that was of course University Day. All of that planning finally paid off on Thursday, when all classes were cancelled beginning at 9:30 a.m., which would not affect my 8 a.m. class. But as a result of all of my hard work of waking up to make it to class on time all semester it provided me with one beautiful day where I didn’t have to settle for a two hour nap, but was able to sleep in until the late hour of 11:30 a.m. This just goes to prove that if you put in the sacrifice dreams can come true, although this dream of sleeping late might be considered small it still necessitated planning and sacrifice, which all paid off in the form of a refreshed student ready to meet the day at noon on Thursday.
