Most people generally consider Labor Day to signal the unofficial end of the summer. With that in mind, I thought I would look back at the past three months and offer my opinions on what were the highlights and lowlights, so here we go …
Movies
I really was surprised how much I enjoyed The Simpsons Movie. I enjoyed the series in its early years, but I thought it should have stopped production a while ago after seeming to run out of much new to say regarding the family. This film proved me wrong, and I cannot remember the last time I laughed out loud so often. See it.
I saw some other films and felt mixed about them. Spider-Man 3, Hairspray and Transformers all had their moments and came off good in general, but I thought they could have been really great with a little more care in certain departments. Still, I cannot say I left any movie appearing on the big screens around here with a sense that I was ripped off, so I guess I can confirm that Hollywood earned its great box office showing this time.
Television
Another surprise for me was Power of 10, where the questions asked in the polls often were provocative and Drew Carey was an engaging host, not overdoing the humor like I feared he would. If he maintains the same approach on The Price is Right, he is going to end up having two hits on his hands on CBS, one in daytime, one in nighttime. That is incredible considering how pathetic The Drew Carey Show wrapped up just three summers ago in new episodes that finished in third or fourth place in their time period.
Otherwise … oh, brother! There was really no new program that caught my attention, and I was not alone in that fact, as the horrible Anchorwoman performed so badly on Fox that it entered the rarified category of being cancelled after just one show. They should have done the same for the rest of the lot, as far as I am concerned. If the offerings the networks put out this year did not encourage you to turn off your TV, nothing will.
Music
I never thought I would enjoy hearing a song about an umbrella, of all things – much less imagine someone write about one – but Rihanna really did a fine job with her song of the same name. Nice video too. I also liked “Makes Me Wonder” by Maroon 5 See, a guy in his 40s can stay hip to today’s music too!
Regardless of my opinions, I hope you had a great summer wherever you were and whatever you did, and let’s hope this fall will be even better for us all.
